Insulin Pump Training

When you start your training on the insulin pump.  You might be overwhelmed with all the new terms you're going to learn.  Stuff like Infusion Sets, Cannula, Quick Release, Reservoir, Priming, Meal and Correction Bolus,  Basal Rate and more.

Depending on your doctor, you may have to spend at least a week practicing with your new pump and may only pump saline solution during this period.  This may seem like a waste of time for some of us like it did myself, but for others that have the jitters, this may be the best way to get you comfortable with pumping.  During your training period, you'll infuse in front of your doctor with his or her help, then you will have an opportunity to infuse by yourself at home.

One of the best things that helped me start so quickly was because I was ready for this.  I read a lot of stories online about pumping insulin, chatted with many new friends that used the insulin pump and I must have watched the videos that I received from Disetronic and MiniMed about how to pump.  I was ready to jump right in without the formal training.

Just be sure to watch and listen carefully.  Of coarse you're going to run into a snag or two when you first begin, but don't let this get you down.  I've fallen victim to a few holes when I first began pumping but I learned from my mistakes and kept them in mind so I wouldn't fall victim again.

Keep in mind, you'll more than likely have a great support team from your doctor and the company that the insulin pump came from.
