Setting up your Insulin Pump

Depending on what insulin pump you go for, all of them have their own little functions and setup options.  For now, I will only go through the setup options for the Mini-Med 508 Insulin pump.  Be aware, these are not the only setup options that come with this pump.  I will just review the most important steps.

  • Set the time and date on your pump.  From the time of day screen, press SEL until you get to the SETUP I screen.  Press ACT, PROG HOURS, MINUTES, YEAR, MONTH and DAY will appear.  Use the arrow keys to select the part you wish to change then press ACT to finalize your choice.

  • Next you'll select your basal rate.  From the time of day screen, press SEL until you reach  BASAL RATE.  The first basal rate will always start at 12:00am.  Use the arrow keys and select your basal rate then press ACT.  To add another basal rate, use the arrows to select your start time.  Remember that your start time is the end time from your last basal.  Follow the process until you have all the basal rates set.

  • Other functions that you can set up are to childproof your pump so children cannot accidentally push buttons and change programming features of the pump.  There are options to setup things like the audio bolas and remote control options.  For a full list of features to setup, please refer to your users manual.
