Insulin Pumpers R Us

Insulin pump therapy, what the doctors call continuous subcutaneous infusion, offers a number of advantages over traditional (hypodermic injection) insulin therapy. Although the insulin pump is complex and expensive, it does a better job than the needle, and if you use insulin, it may do a better job for you.

Where needle-injecting insulin users generally mix different insulin types to achieve optimal "coverage," pump users use only short-acting insulin, adjusting the machine rather than their insulin mix.  This produces results more resembling those of a healthy (non-diabetic) pancreas.

Once the new steps necessary to using the pump have been mastered, insulin pumpers report greater ease in diabetes self-management, less anxiety and depression, and significantly fewer problems with hypoglycemic events, compared with those on multiple insulin injection therapy.

Before I started, we calculated that I had given myself well over 39,000 insulin injections and performed over 45,000 blood sugar tests.  Though, I still find myself injecting myself from time to time during problem highs that I sometimes experience due to a problem with my infusion site (usually I get careless and yank out my tubing) I still have to do those blood sugar tests more than I did before starting on the pump.  I'm pretty good at doing them 6-10 times a day just to be safe.

I've personally been using an insulin pump since November 2001 and so far love it.  I've had much better control of my blood sugar levels, I have begun to feel a lot better on a daily basis and have been able to eat pretty much what I want to eat, and when I want to eat.  It's been a great change for the better in my life and would highly recommend it to anybody that lives with injecting themselves on a daily basis.

I wish to send a huge giant thanks to a great diabetic friend of mine named Kathy Korol.  She's a really great woman who's going to run a marathon to raise money to find a cure for diabetes.  You can check out her web site and her progress by clicking here.  Help her and the rest of the diabetics and future diabetics by going to her web site and making a contribution to her efforts.

My new project is now available for those who would like an easy way to figure out correction and meal boluses.  Click here and download your very own copy of BolusCalc today.  It's free and it's easy to use, especially for those that are new to insulin pumps.
