Information for diabetics and their families

November 2, 2001 was my next appointment.  I knew this appointment would give me the answer if I was going to get my pump soon or not.

My Endo and I sat down and she looked over 6 months of blood sugar tests I did and my last HbA1c count.

She said she wanted me to get started.  She asked me what insulin pump I wanted to go on.  I told her I thought Disetronic was the one that I wanted and gave her my reasons.  She told me about her other patients that were using Minimed which were like 130 and none of them had problems with Minimed pumps.  She only had 3 that were using Disetronic's pump.  I guess that changed my mind after hearing that, so I decided to give Minimed my business.

My Endo ordered me my pump the same day.  It was shipped to me along with a 6 month supply of infusion sets, reservoirs and a few other things.  I received my pump on November 12th.  It came shipped by Fed-Ex which I was surprised.  Minimed had called me the following Friday and asked me what color of pump I wanted.  I had a choice to make which was cool in a way.  I guess the default color is black so I ordered the blue one like the one pictured above.

I spent that day reading all the manuals and stuff that came with it which were very good reading.  I learned quite a bit.  Then watched the video on how to program and operate the pump.

I have an appointment this Thursday (November 15th) to start training with the pump.  This will involve learning to load the pump with insulin (training will only involve using a saline solution) inserting the infusion set then I'll spend a few days practicing infusing myself with the bolus and then I have a day which I'll change the infusion set myself.  Then next week, I get placed on the insulin.  I'm counting down the minutes now!  I'm very excited!
